Team Overview

As Legal Counsel, you are a vital part of the US Legal Division Team. This position focuses on appellate advocacy. You will report to the Vice President of Appellate Advocacy, Sr. Counsel. The Legal Counsel is an experienced attorney capable of undertaking complex litigation and appellate advocacy without substantial oversight. Your responsibilities include practicing civil litigation with an emphasis on Constitutional law and 42 U.S.C. § 1983 civil rights actions, formulating legal strategy, drafting briefs, advising clients, and overseeing administrative and paralegal support functions.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collaborate with the team to assess, develop, and initiate appellate advocacy that advances ADF's objectives.
  2. Litigate complex cases at appellate court levels, including research, strategy, briefs, and oral argument preparation.
  3. Draft legal briefs and memos for state and federal appellate courts.
  4. Argue cases before appellate courts.
  5. Engage with the Development team, including speaking engagements and events.
  6. Interact with media regarding cases and issues.
  7. Advise allied attorneys on legal issues within your expertise.
  8. Develop relationships with allied attorneys and potential allies.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform related duties or special projects as assigned.
Skills Needed
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and Westlaw.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (oral and written), and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail and proven project management skills.
  • Problem-solving abilities and customer service skills.
Ability to
  • Handle confidential information professionally.
  • Work collaboratively within a team.
  • Prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Education and Experience
  • J.D. and licensed to practice law.
  • Clerkship with the U.S. Supreme Court preferred.
  • 3-4 years of litigation or clerkship experience.
