Schedule: Hybrid - 4 days in-office, 1 day remote
Compensation: $22-$32/hour, depending on experience
About the Opportunity
A well-established and growing plaintiff-side law firm in Chicago is seeking a Workers' Compensation Legal Assistant to join its team. This position will provide direct support to attorneys handling workers compensation matters on behalf of injured workers throughout Illinois.
The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, compassionate, and comfortable working in a fast-paced legal environment. Workers' compensation experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day administrative and legal support to workers' compensation attorneys.
- Maintain and organize client files, case documents, correspondence, and other legal records.
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients regarding case-related matters.
- Communicate with insurance carriers, adjusters, medical providers, opposing counsel, and other parties as needed.
- Request, obtain, and organize medical records, medical bills, treatment information, and other documentation relevant to client claims.
- Assist attorneys with preparation of legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, and case materials.
- Assist with filings and documentation related to the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission.
- Monitor case deadlines, appointments, hearings, and other important dates.
- Maintain attorney calendars and assist with scheduling hearings, depositions, medical appointments, and client meetings.
- Assist attorneys with case preparation from initial intake through settlement or resolution.
- Track case activity and ensure files and case management systems remain accurate and up to date.
- Provide general administrative support to attorneys and the workers' compensation team.
- Handle confidential client information with professionalism and discretion.
- Take initiative to follow up on outstanding documents, records, and case-related tasks.
Qualifications
- Prior experience as a legal assistant, legal secretary, paralegal, or similar legal support role.
- Workers' compensation experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience supporting plaintiff-side workers' compensation matters. Personal injury, litigation, insurance defense, or other related legal experience will also be considered.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple cases, deadlines, and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Professional and empathetic approach to working with clients who may be dealing with significant injuries and medical issues.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Outlook.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a collaborative team.
- Spanish language skills are preferred but not required.
