Job summary

Jersey Battered Women's Service, Inc (Jbws) seeks a dynamic part-time Legal Advocate for the Legal Advocacy Program. The role supports survivors of domestic violence, helping them obtain protections and access advocacy services with culturally aware, trauma-informed care.

The candidate will work on-site during daytime hours, liaising with court personnel, and providing information about PDVA and related statutes, with a focus on empowering clients and maintaining professional standards.

Qualifications

• BA in Social Work or equivalent work experience required.
• Minimum of three years providing case management services.
• Fluent English/Spanish; written and reading preferred.
• Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• 40-hour domestic violence training preferred, or be willing to complete training on hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal information around PDVA and related statutes to individuals.
• Assist survivors to file complaints and attend court proceedings.
• Provide advocacy relevant to individual needs and help clients make informed decisions.
• Accompany survivors to legal proceedings.
• Plan and assist in educational legal information sessions.

Legal Advocate (LAS) -Part time 14 hours p/wk AGENCY JBWS is a private, nonprofit agency that provides safety, support, and solutions for abuse for anyone who faces the issues of intimate partner abuse regardless of severity of the abuse, marital status, income, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnicity. Our ideal candidate has a proven ability to work compassionately and effectively with diverse clients around various needs as a result of domestic violence. This person will assist individuals who experience DV with obtaining the protection provided under the law as well as support and advocacy services. This individual will have knowledge and understanding of the experiences of marginalized communities, working collaboratively and flexibly to meet the needs of those served.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

• Provide legal information around the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (PDVA), and related statutes to individuals.
• Assist survivors to file complaints and/or attend court/legal proceedings.
• Provide advocacy relevant to individual needs and assist clients in making informed decisions.
• Accompany survivors to legal proceedings.
• Plan and assist in the implementation of educational legal information sessions.
• Document statistics related to clients serviced.
• Establish and maintain a professional demeanor in court and with court staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and respond appropriately to crisis and stressful situations.
• Actively contributes to a positive team environment and provides the collaboration needed for high-quality services to survivors.
• Participate in and contribute to a healthy work environment and positive agency morale.

QUALIFICATIONS QUALIFICATIONS include but are not limited to:

• Education: BA in Social Work/related field or equivalent work experience
• Minimum of three years providing case management services.
• Fluent Bilingual English/Spanish ability including verbal, written and reading preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with community partners including court personnel.
• Excellent organizational, documentation and interpersonal skills.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Must be culturally aware and sensitive to challenges faced particularly in marginalized populations.
• Candidates with 40-hour domestic violence training preferred, however candidates without training must complete 40-hours of domestic violence training upon hire provided and paid for by agency.
