Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Eastern Territory is hiring a part-time Learning Zone Tutor for the Haven of Hope Community Center in Philadelphia. Immediate start, evenings and weekends required. You will develop lesson plans, tutor students, and help manage records while supporting other center activities.

Qualifications include a high school diploma with tutoring experience; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required. A PA driver’s license is often needed for outreach and programming support.

Salary and Grade: $15.00 per hour; 74 NE

About Philadelphia Social Service Ministries:

Philadelphia Social Service Ministries (PSSM) is the collection of social services programs that the Salvation Army provides in Philadelphia. These programs include family emergency housing, anti-trafficking, and permanent housing for seniors and chronically homeless adults.

Responsibilities

The Learning Zone Tutor develops and implements lesson plans for students, assists students with homework, and provides academic tutoring to assigned students, either in a group and/or individually aimed at developing student mastery, using Math and English curriculums such as Achieve Now, Do the Math, After the Bell, and math decoding curriculums. The Learning Zone Tutor assists with community center programming as directed by the Learning Zone and Day Camp Coordinator; maintains and updates daily and weekly student records with required data on academic progress, attendance, and behavior. Serve as a positive role model. The Learning Zone Tutor assists and supports other activities as needed or instructed by the Learning Zone and Day Camp Coordinator or Community Center Director, such as with seasonal programs (e.g., backpack giveaway, etc.). The above list of job duties is not exclusive or exhaustive and the candidate will be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the post.

Qualifications

• High school diploma with 2-3 years of tutoring/teaching experience; Bachelor’s degree completed or in-progress is preferred but not required.
• Must conduct oneself in a manner that reflects credit on The Salvation Army and its leadership.
• Must possess strong organizational skills and be detail oriented and be able to see projects to completion.
• Must possess a professional attitude and approach to problem-solving.
• Must have excellent interpersonal communication and classroom management skills.
• Must have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
• As a Mandated Reporter, must provide proof of having completed training on recognizing and reporting child abuse meeting the training standards of PA Act 153 of2014 with recurrent training required every five years thereafter.
• Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and PA DHS Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. In addition, completion of a Pennsylvania approved Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training is necessary prior to employment.
