Job summary

The University of Iowa is seeking a Learning Experience & Technology Specialist to join University Human Resources’ Organizational Effectiveness team. The role blends instructional design, technology, and consultation to strengthen employee learning and performance across the university.

You will design learning experiences, curate resources, and analyze data to guide improvements, while ensuring accessibility and using appropriate delivery methods across platforms.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in instructional design, learning design, or related field.
  • Typically 3–5 years designing, developing, or supporting workplace learning.
  • Experience applying adult learning and learning design principles.
  • Experience consulting with stakeholders on learning needs.
  • Experience using learning technologies or digital platforms to develop deliver, manage, or support learning.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, consultation, and problem‑solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and organize learning resources and pathways for point‑of‑need access.
  • Use learner needs, performance data, and feedback to inform design and improve learner experience.
  • Consult with university partners to understand learning needs and recommend approaches, resources, and delivery methods.

  • Advise on accessibility and online learning standards for learning experiences and resources.
  • Track participation, utilization, learner experience, and outcomes to identify improvements.
  • Develop regular reports and insights to support decisions about learning offerings and priorities.

Learning Experience & Technology Specialist

The Learning Experience & Technology Specialist is part of the Organizational Effectiveness team within University Human Resources and helps make employee learning effective, accessible, and sustainable across the University of Iowa. The position combines learning design, learning technology, and consultation to help employees build capability and apply learning in ways that strengthen performance. The specialist develops and curates learning resources, supports and improves the systems that enable learning, and provides learning and design expertise to colleagues across the university.

There is an expectation that the person in this position will maintain effective, civil, and respectful working relationships with the University of Iowa campus community and uphold the University’s commitment to creating welcoming and respectful environments for all.

What you may do in this role:

  • Design and develop learning experiences that build capability, provide opportunities for practice, and help employees and leaders apply learning in their work.
  • Develop, curate, and organize learning resources and pathways that help employees find and use learning at the point of need.
  • Use learner needs, performance needs, utilization data, and feedback to inform learning design and continuously improve the learner experience.
  • Consult with university partners to understand learning needs and recommend appropriate learning approaches, resources, technologies, and delivery methods.
  • Build capability by providing learning design expertise, guidance, tools, and feedback that help others create and deliver effective learning experiences.
  • Advise on accessibility and online learning standards and help them apply those requirements to their learning experiences and resources.
  • Track and analyze participation, utilization, learner experience, and available outcome data to understand how learning resources and platforms are being used and where improvements are needed.
  • Develop regular reports and insights that support decisions about learning offerings, resources, platforms, and priorities.

  • Demonstrated experience applying adult learning and learning design principles to create practical, effective learning experiences that support application on the job.
  • Experience consulting with stakeholders on learning needs and providing guidance on learning approaches, resources, or solutions.
  • Experience using learning technologies or digital platforms to develop, deliver, manage, or support learning.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, consultation, and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience administering or supporting a learning management system or other digital learning platform.
  • Experience applying accessibility principles and standards to digital learning content and experiences.
  • Experience using learning data, feedback, or evaluation results to improve learning experiences.
  • Experience curating digital learning resources or developing self-service learning and performance support.
  • Experience using or exploring emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to support learning.
  • Experience working effectively in a complex or decentralized organization.
