Job summary

Arizona Science Center is seeking a Learning and Engagement Specialist (Part Time) to deliver STEAM experiences across the state through the Science on Wheels team. The LES will prepare and facilitate activities, demonstrations, events, and camps, traveling to schools, libraries, and community sites with overnight travel as needed.

Qualified candidates will have a background in science, education, or museums and strong public speaking and collaboration skills.

Qualifications

  • Background in science, education, or museum settings preferred.
  • Experience engaging audiences in interactive, hands-on learning.
  • Experience planning and coordinating activities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, present, and facilitate hands-on STEAM events for various participants.
  • Supervise activities to ensure safe and engaging experiences.
  • Educate students PreK-12 with developmentally appropriate content.
  • Prepare materials and set up teaching spaces for programs.

Learning and Engagement Specialist - Part Time

Position Summary

The Learning and Engagement Specialist (LES) ensures and helps deliver the mission of Arizona Science Center: enrich all communities & audiences through science. As part of the Science on Wheels team, the LES provides exemplary Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) engagement experiences outside of the museum, within the state of Arizona.

The LES prepares and facilitates engaging STEAM activities, demonstrations, events, and camps. The LES travels to various sites, including schools, libraries, resource centers, and community events. While most programming occurs within or near Maricopa County, overnight travel throughout Arizona is required.

The LES provides quality teaching and community support, collaboration with team members, and fosters engagement for success in learning.

Overall, the LES offers inclusive and engaging STEAM experiences by serving as a friendly, professional, and team-oriented leader at Arizona Science Center.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Prepare, present, and facilitate hands‑on STEAM events for participants in schools, libraries, resource centers, camps, etc.
  • Supervise activities and experiments to ensure safe and engaging experiences.
  • Educate students PreK-12 with developmentally and grade‑level appropriate content
  • Prepare materials and set up teaching spaces for programs
  • Clean, organize, and maintain upkeep of program materials
  • Communicate with contacts before, during, and after programs
  • Research inquiry‑based activities and assist with the creation and implementation of new program content
  • Provide excellent communication with team members and collaborate on projects and programs
  • Assist other teams within Arizona Science Center, as needed
  • Assist Arizona Science Center in delivering its mission throughout the entire state of Arizona
Qualifications

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty. The requirements below are a representative combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities that would enable an individual to be qualified for this position.

Education And Experience
  • A science, education, and or museum background is highly preferred
  • Experience working in an educational setting with a variety of audiences
  • Experience engaging people in interactive and hands‑on learning experiences
  • Experience in planning and coordinating activities
Skills And Knowledge
  • Ability to present effectively to diverse audiences
  • Effective and confident public speaking
  • Ability to adapt program content and complexity for a variety of ages and interests
  • Ability to manage and engage large and small groups
  • Problem‑solving and critical thinking
  • Effective and prompt verbal and written communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Office, and basic computer functions
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends, early mornings, evenings, and overnights
  • Knowledge of PreK-12 education systems, state science standards, and youth development concepts and strategies
  • Understanding of the diverse people and needs in Maricopa County and ensure communities, and commitment to culturally responsive teaching
  • Understanding of and commitment to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and can operate a vehicle
