Learn-to-Swim Instructor performs a wide variety of tasks related to the safety, well-being, and instruction of swimmers, and indirect responsibilities to ensure a positive public relations image and proper facility and park appearance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

  • The instruction of all phases and levels of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim (LTS) program.
  • The supervision, instruction and constant surveillance of program participants and patrons during instructional sessions.
  • Punctuality and attendance at all LTS classes.
  • Reporting to work fifteen (15) minutes prior to scheduled start time.
  • Pool readiness prior to and after LTS lessons.
  • Relating problem situations to the Aquatics Coordinator or Assistant Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Advance preparation, planning for classes, and materials necessary to ensure quality instruction.
  • Keeping current and maintain all planning written records as required by the Assistant Aquatics Coordinator and/or the American Red Cross in a neat, orderly and legible manner.
  • Maintaining effective class discipline.
  • Proper care of instructional aides (kickboards, ring buoys, etc.).
  • Knowledge of the practices and procedures in relation to the LTS program.
  • The success of the instruction of swimming at swimming pool through the LTS program.
  • Acting in a professional manner at all times.
  • Providing quality customer service.
  • Attending staff meetings and in-service trainings as required.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Pursue job responsibilities in a professional and mature manner through the use of instructional skills to ensure the quality of swim lessons.
  • To encourage learning, demonstrate necessary skills, and provide a courteous program.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with pool guests, co-workers and facility management in a positive manner.
  • Willingness to promote the Thornton Park complex and its related programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum age of 15 years old.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor), preferred.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED, required within first 30 days of hire.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard, preferred.
  • Previous swim instructional experience, preferred.
  • A minimum of 16-hours of training may be used in lieu of certifications (to be completed within first 30 days of hire).
