Job summary

The Nature Conservancy in Morehead, KY is seeking an Engine Boss (ENGB) to lead a Type VI engine crew and manage daily operations, safety, and logistics. This hourly, seasonal role begins in January and ends in April, with housing provided during the full-time period.

You will oversee the crew, coordinate time reporting and planning, and stay current with burn techniques and equipment to advance professional development in wildland fire management.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 1-year training in fire operations or related field.
• Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1) and FFT1 task book.
• Two or more seasons as a Senior Burn Crew Member or similar qualification.
• Must achieve physical fitness standards as set by the local Fire Manager and the TNC Fire Manual.
• Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment.
• Experience supervising staff or volunteers is required
• May be required to obtain related licenses and certifications such as First Aid/CPR and herbicide application.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Type VI engine crew and oversee daily tasks and admin duties (time reporting, accomplishment tracking, logistics, purchases).
• Maintain and operate a full suite of wildland fire equipment and ensure engine readiness.
• Ensure crew safety and oversee training and preparedness activities.
• Build relationships within the fire community and with partner agencies.
