Job summary

MNL, including Red Rock Fire, seeks an Engine Boss to lead crews and a Type 2/3/6 engine on national wildfire assignments. The role ensures safety, readiness, and mission success while coordinating with partners and Incident Command.

Travel is extensive with extended deployments; you will train, maintain equipment, and prepare for incidents, ensuring adherence to NWCG standards and safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Current NWCG Engine Boss qualification with ENGB Position Task Book.
  • At least three years of wildland fire experience.
  • Working knowledge of wildfire suppression operations and NWCG standards.
  • Ability to lead personnel and communicate clearly under pressure.
  • Ability to travel extensively for assignments.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Current DOT Medical Certificate or ability to obtain one within 30 days.
  • Ability to pass NWCG Arduous Work Capacity Test annually.
  • Ability to work in heat, smoke, dust, uneven terrain and adverse weather while wearing PPE.
  • Ability to hike over steep and remote terrain and lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Required NWCG Training: ICS-100, ICS-200, IS-700, L-180, S-190, RT-130, S-230, S-231, S-290.
  • Preferred NWCG Training: RXB2, CRWB, ICT5

Responsibilities

  • Lead assigned firefighters and wildland fire engines during suppression assignments.
  • Communicate tactical assignments and objectives clearly to personnel.
  • Execute suppression tactics per Incident Action Plans and NWCG standards.
  • Maintain situational awareness and manage risk as conditions change.
  • Ensure crew accountability, safety, and compliance with fireline procedures.
  • Coordinate with Incident Command, agencies and partners.
  • Inspect and maintain engines, pumps, hoses, radios, tools and equipment.
  • Complete shift tickets and reports accurately and on time.
  • Train and mentor assigned firefighters.
  • Participate in preseason training and post-incident evaluations.
  • Represent MNL professionally with agencies and the public.
