Job summary

C.J. Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking a skilled Lead Operator for our Water and Sewer department. The role centers on safely operating heavy equipment, leading crews, and ensuring quality workmanship on underground utility projects across city streets and rural sites.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years of lead operator experience laying water mains, reads grades/blueprints, and commits to safety and productivity. CDL preferred; ability to travel as needed is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Lead Operator laying water mains.
• Experience digging in trench boxes.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• CDL license preferred.
• Must pass and maintain all required operator qualifications and testing.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including excavators, dozers, skid steers, and other machinery safely and efficiently.
• Read and interpret grades, blueprints, and job specifications.
• Lead by example in productivity, safety, and quality standards on job sites.
• Communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors regarding job progress and site conditions.
• Work independently and as part of a crew to meet project goals.
