Job description

J&H Services, Inc. is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Heavy Utility Construction Operator to join our team. The Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment used in underground utility construction projects, including water, sewer, storm drain, and related infrastructure installations. This position requires experience working around existing utilities, interpreting plans, and maintaining a safe and productive job site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, trenchers, and other construction machinery.
• Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and utility installation activities.
• Safely expose and work around existing underground utilities.
• Read and interpret utility plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and project specifications.
• Assist with the installation of water lines, sewer lines, storm drainage systems, and related utility infrastructure.
• Conduct daily equipment inspections and complete required maintenance reports.
• Identify equipment issues and report repair needs promptly.
• Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific requirements.
• Coordinate with supervisors, foremen, laborers, and subcontractors to ensure project efficiency.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment in utility construction.
• Knowledge of underground utility installation methods and procedures.
• Ability to read and understand construction plans and grade stakes.
• Experience working safely around existing utilities and trenching operations.
• Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions and on demanding job sites.
• Strong attention to safety, quality, and productivity.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work long hours, including occasional weekends, as project demands require.
• Ability to safely enter and exit heavy equipment multiple times throughout the day.
