Job summary

C.J. Hughes Construction Co., Inc. is seeking an experienced Lead Operator for our Water and Sewer department.

The role focuses on safely operating heavy equipment while leading crew operations on underground utility projects. Ideal candidates have strong experience laying water mains and reading grades and blueprints in city streets and uneven terrain. The position emphasizes safety, quality, and productivity with opportunities for growth and travel as required.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Lead Operator laying water mains
• Experience digging in trench boxes
• Must pass and maintain all required operator qualifications and testing
• High school diploma or GED preferred
• CDL license preferred

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment including excavators, dozers, skid steers safely and efficiently
• Perform trenching and earthmoving in city streets and rural environments
• Read and interpret grades, blueprints, and job specifications
• Lead crew operations and communicate progress to supervisors
• Safely excavate around utilities and maintain safety
• Install PVC and ductile iron piping 2 to 24 inches as required
• Maintain productivity, safety, and quality on job sites
• Work in all weather and varying terrains
