Qualifications

• Successful completion of NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching certification.
• Annual completion of NFHS Concussions in Sports course or equivalent.
• If coaching cheerleading, complete NFHS Spirit Safety Certification prior to first practice.
• Current CPR/AED certification; NFHS First Aid for Coaches recommended.
• Complete NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest course after June 1 and before first practice.
• All high school head coaches attend one NCHSAA state rules clinic for their sport.

Responsibilities

• Holds organizational meetings for team prospects and encourages participation.
• Assesses player skills and assigns team positions.
• Develops practice schedules for team and individual development.
• Works with athletic director to schedule facilities for practices and competitions.
• Assigns duties to an assistant coach as necessary.
• Coaches and instructs players on rules, equipment, and techniques.
• Observes players to determine needs for improvement.
• Determines game strategy based on team capabilities.
• Maintains standards of student behavior and supervises athletes.
• Monitors academic performance to ensure eligibility; encourages high academics.
• Follows procedures in case of athlete injury.
• Communicates with parents/guardians about athletic performance.
• Follows state, conference, and district athletic regulations.
• Represents the team and promotes the sport with booster clubs and the school community.
• Maintains and cares for equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
• Assists with maintenance of athletic facilities as needed.
• Attends staff development, clinics, and professional activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned by Principal and Athletic Director.
