Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Lead Tutor & Education Coordinator for a Chicago-based nonprofit organization providing individualized academic support and educational programming to students and families from underserved communities. This is a direct-hire, fully onsite opportunity in Chicago, IL, with later working hours during the school year.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Lead Tutor & Education Coordinator will play a hands-on role in creating a supportive, structured, and engaging learning environment while guiding tutors in delivering individualized academic support. This position oversees daily tutoring sessions, supports student learning plans, mentors tutors, and ensures classroom operations run smoothly. The ideal candidate is an experienced K–12 educator who thrives in an active learning environment and is passionate about helping students strengthen their academic skills and confidence.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead daily classroom and tutoring operations, ensuring students and tutors have the materials, technology, learning plans, and support needed for successful sessions.
• Actively oversee the learning environment, identifying student and tutor needs, reinforcing expectations, and helping establish individualized academic and behavioral goals.
• Mentor tutors on effective academic instruction, including reading strategies, homework support, student self-advocacy, learning routines, and strategies for encouraging high-quality student work.
• Support individual students by assessing academic and behavioral needs, providing encouragement and intervention when needed, and collaborating with education and family support staff to strengthen learning plans.
• Develop strong working knowledge of the organization’s educational technology and learning platforms while providing basic technical guidance and troubleshooting support to tutors.
• Maintain timely documentation, participate in staff meetings and professional development, assist with special programming, and support occasional organizational or donor events outside regular working hours.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education and professional experience.
• Demonstrated experience as a lead teacher, classroom educator, or similar K–12 education professional with the ability to independently manage a classroom environment.
• Strong classroom management skills with the ability to actively engage and support multiple students and tutors throughout a session.
• Ability to coach and mentor tutors in instructional strategies while building positive, respectful, and encouraging relationships with students.
• Strong communication, organization, documentation, and technology skills, with the ability to quickly learn new educational tools and platforms.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

This direct-hire, non-exempt position offers an hourly rate of $23–$30/hour, based on experience and qualifications. Overtime will be paid in accordance with organizational policy when additional hours are required. Benefits include paid sick leave, seven days of annual paid time off prorated from the employee’s start date, and 60% employer-paid healthcare coverage when enrolled in an approved plan.

This position is fully onsite in Chicago, IL and requires availability for a later schedule during the school year. School-year hours are generally Monday–Friday, 1:15 PM–9:15 PM, while summer hours are generally Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. Candidates should be comfortable with the school-year evening schedule and occasional organizational events outside regular working hours.
