Job summary

RMS Energy Co seeks a Lead Transformer Technician to direct field activities for installation, assembly, maintenance, and testing of power transformers across substations, plants, and industrial environments. You will supervise crews, coordinate tasks, and ensure safety, quality, and schedule adherence.

Requirements include 8+ years of transformer experience, strong communication, ability to read drawings, and willingness to travel up to 80% of the time across the continental USA.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in transformer assembly, installation, maintenance, and/or field service.
  • Experience leading or directing crews on job sites.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and work procedures.
  • Ability to travel up to 80% across continental USA.
  • Hold a valid driver's license with a clean record; Class A CDL preferred.
  • OSHA certification and TWIC card are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform field work installing, assembling, maintaining, repairing, and testing power transformers and related equipment.
  • Direct daily crew activities and assign tasks to meet project scope and schedule.
  • Serve as on-site liaison with supervisors, PMs and stakeholders regarding progress and field conditions.
  • Ensure safety standards (LOTO, PPE, environmental) are followed.
  • Monitor progress, productivity and quality; adjust operations to meet targets.
  • Interpret technical drawings and procedures; oversee testing and basic diagnostics.
  • Document service reports, checklists and test forms; verify field closure.
  • Identify field issues and help develop corrective actions.
  • Provide on-the-job guidance to junior technicians and ensure proper tool usage.

We’re looking for aLeadTransformer Technician whose primary role is to direct and coordinate day-to-day field activities related to the installation, assembly, maintenance, repair, and testing of power transformers across substations, power plants, and industrial environments. This position is responsible for ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project scope, schedule, and quality standards.

What You’ll Do:
  • Lead and perform field work involving the installation, assembly, maintenance, repair, and testing of power transformers and associated equipment
  • Direct and coordinate daily crew activities, assigning tasks and ensuring work is executed efficiently and according to project scope
  • Serve as the on-site point of contact for supervisors, project managers, and other stakeholders regarding job progress and field conditions
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety standards, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), PPE, and environmental requirements
  • Monitor job progress, productivity, and quality, making real-time adjustments to maintain schedule and performance targets
  • Interpret and follow technical drawings, procedures, and specifications
  • Assist with and oversee transformer testing and basic diagnostics
  • Support and verify completion of field documentation, including service reports, test forms, and checklists, JSAs
  • Identify, document, and communicate field issues, delays, or non-conformances, and assist in developing corrective actions
  • Provide on-the-job guidance and support to junior technicians andensure proper equipment usage
The Experience We’re Looking For:
  • Over 8+ years of experience in transformer assembly, installation, maintenance, and/or field service within substations, power plants, or industrial environments
  • Prior experience leading or directing crews on job sites, including task assignment and workflow coordination
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to interface with team members, supervisors, and other trades on-site
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and work procedures
  • Ability to complete and support field documentation, including service reports, checklists, and basic test records
  • Proven ability to coordinate field activities, manage priorities, and maintain productivity in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with OEM standards, utility requirements, and industry standards
Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to travel up to 80% throughout continental USA, reflecting flexibility and commitment to project needs.
  • Ability to pass a stringent drug screening and background check, ensuring compliance with organizational standards and policies.
  • Hold a valid and current driver's license with a clean driving record, demonstrating reliability and adherence to safety regulations; Class A CDL preferred.
  • OSHA certification and TWIC card are a plus.
Bonus Points for:
  • Experience with transformer oil filtration, testing, or disassembly
  • Possession of a Class A CDL, OSHA training, or a TWIC card
  • Holding a DOT medical certification
  • Familiarity with transformer components, control wiring, or oil filtration
  • Experience using shop equipment, electrical tools, or test platforms
  • Knowledge of transformer teardown or disposal preparation procedures
  • Previous work experience with energized equipment or substations
