Job description

The Lead for Tool & Die is responsible for overseeing and directing tool and die employees to produce high‑quality residential and commercial air conditioning and heating products. The Lead directs the team to produce efficiently with a disruption‑free production environment and a safe work environment. Tool & Die makers are responsible for maintaining all tooling in the plant. The scope of duties includes sharpening all tooling and maintaining proper punch entry and pass line heights; establishing timing of stations on all progressive tooling; maintaining all forming stations in the tooling; operating all tool room equipment; building miscellaneous jigs and fixtures; working with minimal supervision; and troubleshooting tooling problems at the press.

Position Responsibilities

• Design die details and FAI engineering in CAD.
• Run and program EDMs.
• Communicate with Operations team leads to set priority.
• Set priority levels of projects/tasks and direct die makers to specific tasks based on priority (including press calls).
• Own 5S in shop and maintain tooling to ensure quality production parts.
• Build jigs & fixtures.
• Troubleshoot tooling problems at the press.
• Implement engineering changes on existing tooling.

Knowledge And Skills

• Thorough knowledge of machine shop practices.
• Advanced knowledge in die making (able to repair and/or fabricate replacement tooling for molds and dies with tool room equipment excluding equipment limitations).
• Ability to set up, operate, and program conventional, manual, and CNC machines and equipment.
• Ability to fixture and design methods of manufacturing complex parts.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and CAD/CAM drawings.
• Able to read micrometers, calipers and all other precision measuring equipment.
• Compute and verify dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of workpieces.
• Ability to teach employees proper work methods.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with ability to multitask and prioritize to manage multiple projects ensuring on-time completion.
• Strong communication skills to facilitate understanding and problem solving with cross‑functional teams and colleagues.
• Attention to detail, ability to work independently and make competent decisions.
• Ability to work in a safe manner.

Experience

• 6+ years of experience as a machinist.
• 6+ years of Tool & Die work experience in sheet‑metal fabrication shop.

Education

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Technical degree or a minimum of 6 years of progressive on‑the‑job experience.
