Job summary

SUMMARY:

The Lead Theatre Technician is responsible for the administration, coordination, and operational oversight of the comprehensive audio, video, and data-network infrastructure for a 1,500+ seat performing arts facility. This position serves as the primary administrator for the venue's enterprise-level Dante-networked audio environment and supports the configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex A/V and computer-based production systems, including eight Netgear A/V switches segmented across four distinct VLANs to support optimized live‑production data traffic. The Lead Theatre Technician serves as the district's primary technical lead for audio systems, live sound reinforcement, audio archival and mastering, livestream audio support, and assists with the installation, operation, maintenance, and improvement of audio and related computer-based technologies. This position assists with evaluating technical needs, recommending system improvements, coordinating repairs and acquisitions, establishing operational procedures, and ensuring that audio, video, and networked production systems meet professional production standards. This role requires advanced technical knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to coordinate multiple technical priorities in a fast‑paced public performance environment. The Lead Computer/Audio Technician provides technical direction to student interns, part‑time event staff, and production crews, and works closely with the Executive Director, Technical Manager, production staff, district personnel, and outside users of the facility to support safe, efficient, and high‑quality events and performances.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serves as the primary point of contact for assigned performing arts center technical operations and provides on‑site technical direction for productions, performances, rehearsals, district events, and facility use in the absence of the Executive Director and Technical Manager.
• Provides technical leadership for audio, computer‑based production systems, A/V networking, livestreaming, projections, and related performance technologies to support safe, efficient, and high‑quality events.
• Oversees the setup, cabling, configuration, troubleshooting, and operation of audio, video, and networked production systems, including Dante‑networked audio environments, A/V switches, VLAN‑supported production traffic, live mixing, audio transfer, and related computer‑based systems.
• Evaluates the technical requirements of productions, performances, meetings, and events, including overlapping or competing technical demands, and determines appropriate staffing, equipment, setup, and operational support in coordination with the Executive Director, Technical Manager, production staff, and district personnel.
• Monitors the quality and reliability of live audio, data transfer, livestreaming, projections, and related technical systems during events and makes real‑time technical decisions and adjustments based on production needs, safety considerations, and feedback from directors, producers, presenters, and event stakeholders.
• Assists with the development, implementation, and monitoring of technical procedures and safety practices for auditorium facilities, including stage areas, rigging, scene construction spaces, lighting systems, sound equipment, A/V systems, livestreaming equipment, and related production technology.
• Provides training, direction, and technical supervision to student interns, technical crews, and part‑time event staff on equipment use, safety procedures, event expectations, and professional production standards.
• Coordinates with the Technical Manager and Executive Director regarding A/V equipment needs, repairs, replacements, acquisitions, inventory, and budget‑related recommendations for on‑campus and off‑campus technical equipment.
• Serves as a technical resource for district events, Board meetings, livestreamed events, performances, and other programs requiring audio, computer‑based production systems, projections, or A/V support.
• Maintains effective communication with the Executive Director, Technical Manager, designers, stage managers, directors, department heads, district personnel, outside users, and production staff to ensure smooth planning, deployment, and operation of audio and related technologies throughout the rehearsal and performance process.
• Coordinates post‑production breakdown, cleanup, storage, and resetting of technical facilities, materials, and equipment to ensure that spaces and systems are prepared for future events within established timelines.
• Schedules or coordinates building‑related event support systems, including HVAC and automated door locks, to align with approved event schedules and facility‑use needs.
• Attends L2PAC department meetings, production meetings, technical rehearsals, preview performances, and other planning meetings as needed to support technical readiness and operational continuity.
• Maintains current knowledge of live audio mixing, mastering, Dante networking, network administration, livestreaming, audio safety, A/V production standards, stage safety, and emerging technologies and procedures related to performing arts center operations.
• Fosters professional and collegial working relationships with production staff, district personnel, students, parents, community members, outside users, and other stakeholders involved in productions, programs, and events.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum 2-4 years' experience in Live Sound Management and Operation and/or Technical Theatre
• Bachelor's Degree in Technical Direction preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

• DANTE Level 1 Certification (Preferred)
• OSHA 10 Certification (Preferred)

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING SKILLS:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
