Equiliem in Grand Rapids, MI seeks a Lead Test Engineering Technician to lead design, build, and execution of development and qualification testing for electromechanical products in an engineering lab. The role emphasizes electrical systems, motor controls, soldering, test equipment, and measurement systems while supporting mechanical/hydraulic testing.

You will provide technical leadership to technicians, maintain lab infrastructure, and support new product development and qualification

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in test engineering, electrical/electromechanical systems, electronics, motor controls, or a related engineering environment.
• Hands-on electrical and motor controls experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain advanced test systems used for development, qualification, environmental, and production testing.
• Build, wire, solder, assemble, instrument, and troubleshoot circuit boards, actuators, motor controllers, test panels, and related hardware.
• Develop test setups and execute mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and environmental testing in accordance with approved test plans, procedures, specifications, and applicable standards.
• Perform testing in accordance with standards such as DO-160 and MIL-STD-810.
• Use laboratory instrumentation and measurement equipment, including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, function generators, power supplies, data acquisition systems, pressure transducers, flow meters, load cells, torque transducers, encoders, and related equipment.
• Troubleshoot electrical systems, motor controls, electronics, and electromechanical assemblies.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical and hydraulic schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
• Maintain and improve laboratory test equipment, tooling, infrastructure, and TPM programs.
• Support safe, reliable, and efficient operation of engineering laboratory equipment and test systems.
• Provide technical leadership, training, and direction to technicians and support personnel.
• Coordinate external contractors supporting laboratory, facility, equipment, and infrastructure projects.
• Maintain accurate test records, reports, documentation, and laboratory data.
• Identify technical issues, analyze root causes, and implement effective corrective actions.
• Support new product development, qualification, validation, and other engineering test activities.
• Follow all applicable safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Job Summary

The Lead Test Engineering Technician supports the build, setup, execution, troubleshooting, and validation of development and qualification testing for electromechanical products in an engineering laboratory environment. This hands‑on role focuses heavily on electrical systems, motor controls, circuit boards, soldering, test equipment, and measurement systems while also supporting mechanical and hydraulic testing. The technician will provide technical leadership to other technicians, maintain test laboratory equipment and infrastructure, and support new product development and qualification activities.

Job Responsibilities

Job Requirements

• 5+ years of hands‑on experience in test engineering, electrical/electromechanical systems, electronics, motor controls, laboratory testing, or a related engineering environment.
• Strong hands‑on electrical and motor controls experience.
• Hands‑on experience with soldering, circuit board assembly, wiring, and electronics troubleshooting.
• Experience building, modifying, troubleshooting, and repairing test equipment or test systems.
• Experience executing test plans and procedures.
• Experience using laboratory measurement and instrumentation equipment, including oscilloscopes and related data acquisition or measurement systems.
• Strong mechanical and hydraulic aptitude.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, hydraulic schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
• Strong troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to maintain accurate technical documentation and test records.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple activities and priorities.
• Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and results‑driven approach.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
• Ability to work effectively in an engineering laboratory and new product development environment.
• U.S. Person status as defined by ITAR, including U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, Political Asylee, or Refugee.
• Experience supporting new product development and qualification testing preferred.
• Experience with DO-160, MIL-STD-810, or similar environmental and qualification testing standards preferred.

Education

• Associate degree in an engineering‑related field preferred; equivalent applicable hands‑on experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
