Job summary

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center seeks a Research Ecologist, Temperate Forests, to lead an independent research program in temperate forest ecology and strengthen ForestGEO collaborations in the United States. The role requires designing studies, publishing results, and coordinating with partner institutions.

Based in Edgewater, Maryland, the position is a full-time, trust-fund appointment with travel; temporary for up to 3 years with potential extension.

Qualifications

• PhD in forest ecology or a directly related environmental science field.
• Expert knowledge of forest ecology, remote sensing, statistics and climate change.
• Ability to conduct independent research and publish findings.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop a recognized research program in temperate forest ecology.
• Lead ForestGEO temperate-zone collaborations and US-focused research initiatives.
• Conduct independent research leveraging the ForestGEO network and SERC resources.
• Provide scientific guidance to ForestGEO, SERC and GEO-TREES partners.
