Lead System Safety Engineer

Location: Huntsville, AL

Work Arrangement: Hybrid - Must have the ability to obtain a Secret Clearance

Our client is seeking a Lead System Safety Engineer to join our team in Huntsville, AL on the NASA Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services Program. The qualified applicant will cover safety engineering and analysis on a wide variety of projects and programs, from aerospace and DOD/Military Hardware to commercial products.

Position Description:

With minimal direction, performs tasks necessary to ensure the identification of Safety Critical Items and documentation of hazards within systems using various analysis tools and techniques. Understands the basic elements of system safety engineering, including hazard analyses, hazard categorization, end effects, causal analyses, mitigation requirements identification, documentation, tracking, implementation, and residual risk assessment.

Typical analyses include but are not limited to: Fault Tree Analyses, Hazard Analyses, hazard mitigation, Safety risk assessments, and system residual risk assessments.

  • Reviews product systems, associated support equipment and facilities, functional specifications, and operations; establishes safety requirements for assigned systems.
  • Develops safety documents as required to support customer and test, operational, or range requirements.
  • Participates in accident investigations involving damage to products or related facilities; assists in identification of causes and corrective actions.
  • Performs audits of operational areas and reports on the effectiveness of the System Safety program.
  • Performs safety program management tasks including progress reports and schedule tracking.
  • Ancillary duties may include tasks related to environmental safety and health, hazardous materials, industrial hygiene, human factors, reliability engineering, explosive safety, directed energy (laser) safety, and test range safety.
Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field.
  • Knowledge of System Safety fundamentals.
  • Minimum of 10 years of System Safety experience.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.

Additional preferred qualifications include:

  • Familiarity with 29 CFR 1910 and MIL-STD-882.
  • Ability to prepare high-level technical reviews and presentations.
  • Experience with Government or Military programs.
  • Experience in Risk Management.
  • Familiarity with Reliability Engineering.
  • Familiarity with Software Hazard Analyses.
  • Experience working with testing services suppliers in the commercial and DOD/Military sectors.
  • Knowledge of Ammunition and Explosives Safety Standards.

Position follows a standard 5x40 schedule on 1st shift. Role may allow for up to 75% remote work and the potential for full-time employment with the client.
