Trane Technologies seeks a Lead System Engineer to own the design of chiller and heat pump equipment for the North American portfolio. You will lead cross‑functional teams through a stage‑gate development process, apply DFMEA/DVP&R, manage cost models and drive design for manufacturability and reliability.

Requires a Bachelor’s in Engineering and 7+ years in industrial HVAC design/manufacturing, experience with HVAC systems, Creo CAD and PLM.

  • 7+ years of work experience in design or manufacturing of industrial products preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the project’s design and release of chiller and heat pump equipment and subsystems from concept generation through design deliverables.
  • Facilitate cross-functional development to translate MRD to PRD and PDD to meet business objectives.
  • Ensure engineering specs are applied to drive selection and qualification of components.
  • Lead concept design reviews and drawings reviews for subsystems and system.
  • Collaborate to create/modify DFMEA and DVP&R for quality and reliability.
  • Apply best practices to improve project quality, deployment and cost/efficiency.
  • Partner with manufacturing to incorporate DFM principles into design.
  • Own product cost models to meet cost requirements.
  • Collaborate with product management, manufacturing, quality, and project management on requirements and compliance.
  • Travel domestically 5-10% between Pueblo, CO and La Crosse, WI.

Job description

Where Is The Work

Monday to Thursday, work onsite with your colleagues. Fridays, choose your work location, balancing what your work requires.

As the Lead System Engineer, you are responsible for all aspects of equipment design for Chillers and Heat Pumps to support the North American Water-Cooled Chiller product portfolio. You will collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers to create innovative designs that will reduce the energy intensity of our customers’ cooling systems and decarbonize their heating applications with high efficiency heat pumps. You will guide the team to solve problems through a stage-gate development process. This includes, but not limited to, design creation/documentation, change management during development, design for manufacturability, product cost, product performance, reliability, all while maintaining the project schedules.

What You Will Do
  • Oversee the projects design and release of chiller and heat pump equipment designs and sub-systems from concept generation through the release of design deliverables. This includes heat exchangers, compressors, controls, electrical design, general assembly, and any other required subsystems.
  • Facilitate and contribute to the cross-functional development and delivery of market requirements (MRD) to the product requirements documentation (PRD) and the ensuing product design documentation (PDD) to meet business objectives.
  • Ensure the proper engineering specifications and requirements are applied to drive the selection, and qualification of all purchased components/assemblies or internally supplied components.
  • Lead concept design reviews, technical design reviews, detailed model reviews, and drawing reviews for components, sub-systems, and the overall chiller/heat pump system.
  • Collaborate with the cross functional engineering team to create and modify DFMEA and DVP&R to ensure product quality and reliability.
  • Utilize, develop and deploy best practices to increase the quality, deployment and cost/efficiency of the execution and effectiveness of engineering projects and teams.
  • Partner with the manufacturing project leader and the manufacturing engineering team to incorporate design for manufacturing (DFM) principles into the product design.
  • Own the product cost models; ensure the projected cost meets the agreed upon cost requirement.
  • Team with product management, manufacturing, quality, and project management to develop requirements and track compliance to the agreed upon requirements.
  • Travel domestically 5-10% of the time to interact with colleagues working on chiller and heat pump products, typically between Pueblo, CO and La Crosse, WI
What You Will Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (or related technical discipline) and at least 7-years of work experience in design or manufacturing of industrial products is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC equipment and systems is preferred.
Essential Skills Or Competencies
  • Ability to function as the lead engineer by acting to ensure due diligence is applied throughout the design process through coaching, mentoring and oversight of the design team.
  • General knowledge of one or more manufacturing processes to enable the coaching and mentoring of the design team.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others both written and orally.
  • Experience using PLM and CAD systems (preferably Creo).
  • Schedule development and resource planning experience.
  • Design or application experience with building HVAC products
  • Data manipulation in Excel or Tableau.
