Job summary

E2 Consulting Engineers, LP is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer - Physical to oversee the substation physical design team for major utility projects in Southern California. You will produce GA drawings, equipment plans, and BOMs, guiding the effort from concept through detailed engineering.

The role reports to the Substation Engineering Manager and requires strong QA/QC practices, as well as collaboration with project managers and clients.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited B.S. in Electrical Engineering required.
• 10+ years in substation design with utility or consulting firm.
• Experience managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience performing QA/QC of substation drawing packages.
• Strong knowledge of substation systems (up to 500 kV), protection and control.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, MicroStation, or similar design tools.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Leads substation physical design team, including field notes, drawings, specs, estimates, staffing plans and schedules.
• Serve as physical design technical lead from concept to detailed engineering.
• Assign engineering tasks and coordinate workload among engineers, designers, drafters and supporting disciplines.
• Perform QA/QC reviews to ensure a quality product.
• Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client and others.
• Ensure all designs conform to client and industry standards.
• Utilize client/company systems to track and update design activities.
• Attend job site meetings to gather scope of work and provide input during construction.

Overview

The selected candidate will be responsible for leading a design team for deliverables associated with physical design in substation projects supporting one of our largest electric utility clients in Southern California. The deliverables including general arrangement drawings, electrical equipment plan & elevation drawings, above & below grade conduit & grounding drawings, relay house layout and complete bill of materials. The successful candidate will report directly to the Substation Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

• Leads substation physical design team, including the preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and estimates, staffing plan and project schedules.
• Serve as physical design technical lead in substation projects, from conceptual design through detailed engineering.
• Assign engineering tasks and coordinate workload among engineers, designers, drafters, and supporting disciplines.
• Performs careful QA/QC review activities submitted by junior engineers to ensure a quality product.
• Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.
• Ensure all designs conform to client and industry standards.
• Utilize client and/or company information system to track and update design activities.
• Attend job site meetings to gather scope of work.
• May provide field support during construction.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
• 10+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
• Experience managing multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Experience performing quality reviews of substation engineering drawing packages.
• Strong knowledge of substation systems (up to 500 kV), protection and control
• Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook). * Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. * Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, MicroStation, or similar design tools. * Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Professional Engineer's License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
• Experience with substation design and construction standards for electric utilities in California is highly desirable.
