ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Cont.) Technology and Learning

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and Pharmacy Operations Manager, performs a wide variety of technical, quality management, process improvement and training functions within the Pharmacy Sterile Products Area. Serves as the Lead Pharmacy Technician in the Sterile Products Area.

1. Participates in continued learning and possess a willingness and ability to learn and utilize new technology and procedures that continue to develop in their role and throughout the organization.


2. Embraces technological advances that allow us to communicate information effectively and efficiently based on role.

1. Supports organizational and department goals by ensuring only properly trained colleagues are staffing the sterile products area. Coordinates yearly competencies of all staff trained in sterile compounding. Assists the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor by ensuring all staff trained in sterile compounding have appropriate fingertip sampling and media fill testing complete.


2. Ensures all staff are fully competent with compounding skills and practices through regular assessments of skills and technique. Provides regular feedback, re‑training or education when needed to IV room technicians.


3. Recommends appropriate changes to support goals and mission to increase efficiency and decrease expense. Contributes to and supports fiscal management of department resources.


4. Maintains good relationship with all pharmacy staff members to facilitate the communication of new policies and procedures. Motivates, directs, coaches, organizes and coordinates technical staff on assigned shift. Provides opportunity for staff input and feedback at daily huddles. Communicates any issue to the pharmacy technician supervisor or the management team.


5. Helps develop and train new employees. Helps implement and monitor training programs to ensure all new technicians provide the highest quality of care to South Shore Hospital patients. Documents training and competency of all employees for supervisors review.


6. Helps evaluates work performance of employees and makes recommendations for hiring, promotion, demotions, training, and other disciplinary actions and suspensions. Participates in annual performance and evaluation process of staff.


7. Ensure all IV Room procedures are in line with sterile compounding practices and guidelines as described in USP-797 regulations. Makes recommendations to improve processes and resolve issues. Participates in pharmacy programs and policy development. Makes recommendations for improvements and changes to pharmacy policy and procedures.


8. Ensures all IV Clean Room tasks are completed on a daily basis. Reviews Simplify797 tasks and helps follow up on tasks that are overdue.


9. Responsible for environmental sampling plan which is completed by taking surface and air samples of microorganisms using microbiological growth media on a monthly basis. In collaboration with the Pharmacy supervisors or manager, reviews microbiology results and helps recommend appropriate follow‑up or action plans when needed. Ensures all excursion events is documented, reported up the Pharmacy chain of command and associated action plans are completed.


10. Responds to changes in demand, acuity and special circumstances to assure quality pharmacy service by delegating, prioritizing and coordinating workflow. Monitors timely preparation of intravenous medication. Confronts and resolves problems occurring in the sterile products area including issues related to the distribution, dispensing and procurement of medication and pharmacy supplies.


11. Participates in committees and improvement teams that are relevant to Sterile product compounding. Participates on the Pharmacy Safety Team to ensure safe practice and improve safety with sterile product production.


12. Helps maintains an orderly, clean and safe work environment. Minimizes work related risks


13. Performs all duties and responsibilities as described in the pharmacy technician job description related to sterile compounding

Full-Time Evenings (230 pm -11pm) with every 3rd weekend rotation.

License/Registration/Certification Requirements:

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Pharmacy Technician - Board of Registration in Pharmacy (Massachusetts)
