Are you an experienced Lead SQL Database Administrator with a passion for supporting enterprise-level systems in a dynamic and fast-paced environment? Join Ferguson's Supply Chain Solutions & Infrastructure (SCS&I) team, where you’ll play a meaningful role in maintaining and enhancing the database systems that power our Supply Chain operations. Our team is responsible for creating, updating, and supporting applications that drive Ferguson’s order management, inventory control, warehouse automation, and fulfillment processes, including innovative solutions using conveyors and robotic systems.

In this role, you’ll apply your expertise to administer and maintain SQL database systems, ensuring 24/7 availability for our enterprise operations. You’ll collaborate with internal customers, team members, and sponsors to manage database software, perform installations, upgrades, and maintenance, and implement robust backup solutions across MS SQL Server and Oracle environments. With a focus on performance optimization, automation, and cloud integration, you’ll work with innovative technologies, including SQL Server 2016 or higher, Always On Availability Groups, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), while using scripting tools such as T-SQL, PowerShell, and other automation frameworks.

Location: This role is approved to be either Remote within the United States or Hybrid for associates in Newport News, VA, in accordance with company policy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the quality and delivery of technical operations supporting the business according to agreed standards.
  • Provide technical support within the Supply Chain Command Center, including proactive and reactive incident resolution.
  • Install, configure, and maintain MS SQL Server software and applications in both standalone and high availability configurations per Ferguson standards.
  • Participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation, currently required every day due to team structure. This may change to a less frequent rotation in the future.
  • General knowledge of Windows, Networking, and product Security methods (Linux is a plus).
  • Perform proactive reviews of system performance metrics and alerts to ensure regular event correlation and trend analysis.
  • Review system logs to identify potential problems.
  • Create backup and recovery methodologies.
  • Implement software or system releases (patches or upgrades) as requested.
  • Assist technical staff with MS SQL Server and associated software packages.
  • Clone, recover, and migrate databases.
  • Respond to requests for database configuration changes as directed by senior staff or project leads.
  • Administer third-party applications requiring MS SQL Server support as needed.
  • Perform tuning to resolve performance issues in SQL, applications, and at the RDBMS level.
  • Write, execute, and peer review SQL, T-SQL, and PL/SQL scripts, packages, and functions.
  • Write, execute, and peer review OS-level scripts.
  • Create, execute, and report on load testing of applications, databases, and servers.

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong MS SQL database background, including:
  • Installation and service
  • Operating system knowledge
  • Server setup and installation
  • Standalone and high availability configurations
  • Backup and recovery
  • Patching and upgrading
  • Troubleshooting (tracing, identifying and removing locks, code performance, etc.)
  • Development skills:
  • Proper database design and data modeling
  • Table design and creation
  • Query creation and optimization
  • Creating and evaluating views, stored procedures, triggers, and functions
  • Index creation and implementing proper indexing and statistics strategies

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Know the latest on technologies affecting current systems infrastructure, with specialization in database technology.
  • Ensure the knowledge database is populated with resolutions, workarounds, and known issues.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years of MS SQL Server database administration experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of MS SQL Server development experience.
  • Experience with Oracle 12c and newer, including RAC, is a plus.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as Cosmos DB and MongoDB is a plus.
  • Installation, configuration, and support for MS SQL Server 2012 or newer.
  • Implementing High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions within MS SQL Server.
  • Proficiency with SSRS, SSIS, SSAS, Power BI, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Analysis Services.
  • Solid understanding of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity practices.
  • Expertise in database performance tuning and query optimization.
  • Experience with Azure SQL and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
  • Proficient in PowerShell scripting.
  • Managing enterprise-class MS SQL Server databases in a production data center environment.
  • Proactive database health monitoring, deadlock error resolution, maintenance package execution, and space/indexing strategy monitoring.
  • Experience with both OLTP databases and OLAP/data warehousing.
  • Knowledge of data modeling and data typing.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Capability to independently apply knowledge, with awareness of when to request help.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts in a business-friendly manner.
  • Professional and positive demeanor in all situations.
