Job summary

Veracyte, Inc. in San Diego is seeking a meticulous Specimen Processor to accession specimens, document requisitions, and keep the lab orderly.

You will support daily operations, assist in SOP training, and help ensure quality patient care while maintaining schedule flexibility in a dynamic lab setting.

Strong LIS and MS Office skills, 4–5 years accessioning experience, and a bachelor’s degree (preferred) will distinguish candidates; teamwork and initiative are highly valued.

Qualifications

  • 4–5 years accessioning experience in a lab or similar setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with LIS and proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Good judgment, problem-solving ability, and teamwork; able to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Accession specimens, handle documentation, and data entry of requisitions.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and order; support daily tasks and scheduling needs.
  • Coordinate with Specimen Processors to meet quality patient care goals.
  • Contribute to SOP creation, training, and procedural improvements.
  • Assist with regulatory compliance and QA programs; participate in meetings.

Position Responsibilities

Primarily responsible for receiving and accessioning specimens, handling specimen documentation, and data entry of requisitions. Also responsible for keeping the lab clean and orderly.

Lead Specimen Processors are knowledgeable in sample integrity issues and serve as a resource to others in the lab. They maintain flexibility with work schedules, including daily assignments, holiday schedules, and days of the week as determined by business needs.

The person in this position must coordinate integral daily tasks, ensuring that Specimen Processor personnel perform their duties while maintaining schedule flexibility to meet quality patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Proactively contributes to reaching team goals of cost‑effective, high quality patient care services through leadership, technical expertise, and appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Assists in the creation, training, and implementation of departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Enhances existing procedures and services with quality that exceeds expectations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to take initiative, drive productivity, and build a collaborative environment.
  • Understands and performs laboratory activities to all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Performs all duties according to guidelines outlined within quality systems.
  • Participates in long‑term laboratory operations planning, including staffing, equipment, training schedules, and new assay implementation.
  • Demonstrates mastery of all related laboratory’s established standard operating procedures and policies, involving specimen handling and processing, documentation/requisition, recording of processes in accordance with the QA program, and troubleshooting of non‑routine operations.
  • Develops and monitors ongoing performance of employees, providing corrective action and counseling as required.
  • Responsible for training, coaching, supervision, onboarding of new hires, and development of staff.
  • Provides cover for supervisor duties in supervisor absence, including creating schedules and attending/participating in staff/quality meetings, and completing metrics.
Requirements: Qualifications
  • 4‑5 years of accessioning experience and/or in a lab setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent judgment and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Enthusiasm and an entrepreneurial spirit.
Physical Requirements
  • Repetitive movement of hands, arms, and legs.
  • Repetitive movement of fingers (typing and/or writing).
  • Sitting, with occasional walking, standing, stooping, and moving about.
  • Talking and hearing abilities.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
Compensation

For candidates based in our San Diego office, the hourly range is $29.00–$33.00. The final salary offered will depend on factors such as experience, skill set, geographic location, education, etc. Base pay is part of the total compensation package and may include bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units.
