Job summary

The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) seeks a Special Collections Librarian to manage a private library and provide high-quality reference services in Savannah, GA. This on-site role directs reference staff, oversees cataloging of rare materials, and coordinates educational programs and community outreach under the VP of Education and Programs.

Candidates should have a Master’s in Library Science and substantial supervisory experience, with preference for historical society or special collections

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in library and information science from an accredited college or university.
• Eight years of progressively responsible library, museum, and exhibitory experience.
• Five years in a supervisory capacity.
• Experience in a historical society or special collections library preferred.
• Knowledge of cataloging, reference services, and preservation.

Responsibilities

• Manage and supervise reference staff, onboarding, training, and performance management.
• Lead the delivery of high‑quality reference services and oversee image use requests.
• Oversee cataloging and development of rare and archival materials.
• Develop educational programs and community engagement activities.
• Ensure security, maintenance, and proper handling of the reading room and collections.
• Prepare narratives and statistical reports for leadership and external audiences.
