Job summary

City of Las Cruces seeks an experienced waste collection operator to operate a heavy GVW truck and perform essential duties outdoors in varying weather. You will manage routine vehicle maintenance, safety checks, and daily documentation while delivering and collecting residential and commercial containers.

The role requires four years of GVW operation, a Class B CDL, and a clean driving record. You may lead staff in the supervisor's absence and contribute to process improvements and reporting.

Qualifications

• Four (4) years of experience operating vehicles of at least 66,000 pounds (GVW).
• Valid State of New Mexico Class B Commercial driver’s license is required.
• Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.
• Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds and push/pull up to seventy-five (75) pounds; outdoor work in all weather and traffic conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operates a 66,000 pound GVW, 10-wheel truck with loading mechanisms to collect solid waste from residential and commercial locations.
• Maintains safety and proper operation of equipment and follows safety precautions and protocols.
• Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections, routine vehicle service, and refueling; checks fluids and tires.
• Responds to inquiries, complaints, and emergencies; maintains logs and records; prepares reports as required.
• Delivers and removes residential containers and inspects commercial containers for proper function.
• Provides leadership as acting supervisor, assigns tasks, and monitors staff workflow in supervisor's absence.
• Provides training and feedback; conducts evaluations to ensure safety standards and policy adherence.
• Maintains and updates records; seeks to improve operations and efficiency.
