Job summary

Appian is seeking a Lead Software Engineer based in McLean, VA, to tackle scalable, high‑performance challenges across the Appian platform. You will influence design, mentor engineers, and own critical parts of the stack from data layers to UI tooling.

Qualifications

• MS in Computer Science or related field; 5+ years of software development experience.
• Fluency in Java, React and TypeScript; strong multi‑threading and performance analysis skills.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to programming language design and implementation in Appian SAIL framework.
• Write software in a full‑stack web environment leveraging data structures and design patterns.
• Ensure availability, latency, scalability and efficiency; drive reliability improvements.
• Lead code reviews and mentor junior engineers to improve proficiency and quality.
• Identify opportunities for refactoring and performance optimizations; lead efforts.
• Contribute to feature sizing, architecture discussions and design of new features.
• Communicate technical designs clearly to small/medium technical audiences.
• Contribute to long‑term engineering documentation and knowledge sharing.
