Job summary

The Lead Software Engineer at San Diego Blood Bank oversees the software architecture for a new browser-based business application and writes production code most of the time. You will own technology choices, establish standards, and lead the team toward maintainable, secure software.

You will mentor two Software Engineer I roles, translate business needs into technical plans, and ensure high quality through reviews and collaboration with stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field from an accredited college or university.
• Seven or more years of progressively responsible professional software development experience building and supporting web applications.
• Two or more years leading, supervising, or mentoring software developers.
• Experience designing software architecture and selecting technology stacks for new applications.

Responsibilities

• Define and document the overall software architecture for the business application, including languages, frameworks, databases and hosting.
• Design, develop, test, and maintain production code across the full application stack.
• Establish and maintain engineering standards, including coding conventions, version control, code review, automated testing, and CI/CD processes.
• Translate business requirements into technical specifications, work breakdowns, and delivery estimates with stakeholders.
• Plan and prioritize the development backlog and assign work by developer skill level.
• Supervise and mentor two Software Engineer I roles through code reviews and pair programming.
• Review all code prior to release to ensure quality and maintainability.
• Implement and maintain application security best practices, including authentication and data protection.
• Coordinate with IT infrastructure and security staff on integrations, backups and DR planning.
• Maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams and runbooks.
