Job summary

Dorchester County is seeking a part-time Waste Center Attendant to monitor and screen materials at county convenience centers, assist residents, and help maintain site safety and cleanliness.

Under supervision, you will open/close centers, manage traffic, log daily activities, supervise workers when assigned, and support other Solid Waste functions as needed. Work hours include weekdays and some evenings or weekends.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Some related experience preferred.

Job description

Purpose of the Job

The purpose of this job is to monitor and screen all waste and recyclable materials delivered by residents to County convenience centers; to assist the public in placing materials in proper containers; to monitor container volume; and to maintain site appearance and safety.

This position works under close supervision according to set procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Ensuring the timely opening and closing of assigned convenience center; locking building and gates at the end of the day.
• Monitoring and screening all waste and recyclable materials delivered by residents to County convenience centers.
• Directing traffic at drop-off sites.
• Ensuring trash compactor is operational and ready to receive waste from County residents.
• Assisting the public in placing materials in proper containers; determining if waste is acceptable; transferring recyclables from small to large bins; and properly sorts them.
• Monitoring containers to ensure adequate space for continued disposal; calls in end-of-the-day waste and recyclable container volumes as required for scheduling the next day’s collections; calling in collection requests as needed.
• Removing any and all contamination from containers.
• Making sure containers are emptied when full.
• Cleaning up spills in oil collection section and report weekly oil volume readings.
• Maintaining convenience center and surrounding area in a clean, orderly manner; picks up trash and debris as necessary; cleaning drop pans; and hosing down areas to eliminate spills and odors.
• Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of daily activities.
• Answering telephones; provides information and/or assistance to callers and supervisors.
• Cleaning and maintaining assigned equipment and tools.
• Providing training and leadership to workers as assigned.
• Assisting with other Solid Waste Department functions as assigned.
• Performing all duties in accordance with all County policies and procedures, standards of quality and safety, and all applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

Some related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications, Certifications and Licenses

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time position; typical work 52 hours per pay period Monday through Fridays, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the core work hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
