Job summary

Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA seeks a Lead Veterinarian to guide a shelter veterinary program, set medical protocols, monitor disease, and mentor staff.

You will lead a team of Shelter Veterinarians, maintain medical records, supervise operations, and collaborate with public education on animal health. The role requires a DVM with shelter experience, California license, DEA, and strong leadership and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • DVM with minimum five years in a clinical setting; shelter medicine preferred.
  • California State Veterinary License in good standing with valid DEA license.
  • Valid California Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement veterinary medical protocols for all departments.
  • Monitor shelter health and coordinate containment of contagious/zoonotic diseases.
  • Mentor and train staff veterinarians and volunteers; supervise rounds on medical cases.
  • Maintain accurate animal medical records as required by law.
  • Ensure each animal has a clear medical plan including diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.
  • Serve as liaison to public and staff regarding veterinary care policies.
  • Maintain licenses and permits for facilities; supervise substance permits.
  • Provide after-hours guidance on emergencies as needed.
  • Perform examinations, diagnoses and treatments; provide emergency medical care.
  • Consult with specialists on complex cases when appropriate.
  • Perform surgical sterilizations and other approved surgical procedures.
  • Contribute to daily departmental activities and written educational materials.
  • Assist with necropsies and investigations in cruelty/neglect cases.
