Job summary

Merck & Co. in USA (Massachusetts, Boston) seeks a Principal Scientist to lead High Throughput Production and Automation within Discovery Biologics. The role directs molecular biology and protein production teams and oversees automated platforms for rapid screening of biologics.

The candidate will drive integration of computational and wet-lab methods, scale automation, and mentor staff while advancing therapeutics from discovery to clinic. An inclusive, high-performance culture is essential.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Computational Biology, Protein Engineering, Physics, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science or related STEM field with 8+ years industry experience
• Master's with 12+ years industry experience or Bachelor's with 14+ years industry experience in biochemistry or related field
• Experience leading biologic discovery programs and production groups
• Deep expertise in high throughput molecular biology and protein production
• Experience with integrated automated biologic production platforms and automated data capture
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced matrixed research environment
• External reputation through high-impact publications or presentations

Responsibilities

• Provide scientific and strategic leadership to a team of 4 FTEs
• Lead continuous improvement of automated workflows and expansion of automated capabilities
• Manage outsourcing CROs for molecular biology and protein production
• Partner with Discovery Biologics and interdisciplinary teams to achieve objectives
• Oversee liquid handling systems (Dynamic Devices, TECAN, Hamilton) and peripheral equipment
• Support therapeutic program leadership in collaboration with Therapeutic Areas
• Mentor scientists and foster a high-performing team
• Promote external reputation of Discovery Biologics
