Job summary

Foundation Alloy Technology Explorations, Inc Cambridge, MA seeks an R&D Group Lead Scientist to head a multidisciplinary team in inventing next‑generation alloys and optimizing their manufacturing. You will execute experimental metallurgy while mentoring early career engineers and staying hands-on with materials science.

You will guide alloy development from concept through process parameters, characterization, and scale-up, collaborating with product teams to convert discoveries into saleable

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or a related engineering field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Passion for imagining what's possible with energy, leadership, and creativity in a fast-paced start-up.
  • Proven experience in metallurgical processing and alloy design.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a major product or process development project and collaborate organization-wide.
  • Hands-on experience with metallurgical computational design tools, characterization techniques, and analytical methods.
  • Strong communication across levels; direct mentorship is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead invention and engineering of next-generation alloys using computational design and process-structure-property experiments.
  • Hands-on development of alloy manufacturing processes and powder metallurgy.
  • Develop process parameters to achieve target microstructure and properties.
  • Characterize new materials using advanced techniques and analyze data.
  • Mentor and manage an high-performing R&D team, fostering technical excellence.
  • Represent the company at conferences, trade shows, and with customers.
