Qualifications

• State Minimum Requirements - A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
• Agency Minimum Requirements - Must have at least a high school diploma and the following additional requirements:
• TIME IN GRADE – Minimum of five (5) years Certified Law Enforcement Service Time and at least six (6) months as SCHP Lance Corporal or rank of SCHP Master Trooper by closing date.
• PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION – Must score 70 or higher on Promotional Examination within two years of closing date.
• PROMOTIONAL INTERVIEW PANEL – Must complete Promotional Interview Panel within two years of closing date.
• DISCIPLINARY ACTION – Ineligible if suspended or under investigation; past demotions may affect eligibility.
• EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – Ineligible if received Unsuccessful rating or PIP in last 12 months.
• PROBATIONARY PERIOD – Ineligible if serving one year probation.
• RESIDENCY – Must reside within the specified post area or within 45 minutes response time.
• Must maintain SC Class I Law Enforcement Officer certification.
• Must have excellent knowledge of traffic laws and ability to supervise others.

Responsibilities

• Serves as a SCHP First Line Supervisor and patrols to enforce SC traffic laws and other state laws.
• Assumes squad leader duties in absence of Post Sergeant(s) and supervises troopers.
• Reviews reports, citations, and documentation for legibility and accuracy.
• Assists in presenting cases in court and in counseling subordinates.
• Monitors equipment maintenance and assigns personnel and schedules.
• Investigates collisions and determines enforcement actions through the judicial process.
• Provides expert testimony in court and maintains LEO certifications.
• Maintains community relations and participates in safety programs.
• Oversees compliance with SCHP SOPs and department policies; communicates with Post command.
