Job summary

Discord is seeking a highly technical Engineering Manager to lead the Safety ML team. You will own end-to-end production safety models and drive a technical roadmap across Trust & Safety, Product, Policy, Legal, and Data Science.

The role emphasizes coaching engineers, hands-on coding when needed, and delivering scalable ML systems at a large user scale. The base US salary ranges from $272,000 to $306,000 plus equity and benefits, with compensation determined by role, experience, and training.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, or Applied Scientist.
• 3+ years as an Engineering Manager managing 5+ engineers.
• Hands-on depth in abuse/fraud detection, content classification, behavioral modeling, graph-based modeling, or LLM-based classification systems.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration.
• Ability to work in ambiguous environments and solve complex problems.
• First principles thinker who collaborates on pragmatic solutions.
• Proven record of shipping ML systems to production at scale.
• Passionate about coaching engineers and also hands-on coding when needed.
• Keeps up with industry trends and identifies new technologies.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead an exceptional team of ML engineers by hiring, coaching, and instilling ownership and impact.
• Drive the technical vision and roadmap for Safety ML with partners across Trust & Safety, Product, Policy, Legal, and Data Science.
• Own end-to-end lifecycle of production safety models: capabilities, performance, and health of systems making enforcement decisions.
• Raise the bar and ensure the team delivers extraordinary results.
• Partner with Trust & Safety on label quality, golden sets, and automating manual investigations.
• Collaborate with other Engineering Managers to improve the Engineering organization and workplace philosophy.
