Job summary

Umbra in the United States is seeking a Senior Flight Software Engineer with expertise in Rust to lead embedded software for space missions. You will define software requirements, design architecture, write code, and lead integration and testing with flight hardware.

The role demands strong communication, systems thinking, and mentoring. On-site work with offices in Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA; Arlington, VA; or Reston, VA, with up to 15% travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or higher degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years architecting and developing high-reliability software with Rust or Modern C/C++.
• 4+ years in systems and/or embedded software development with Rust or Modern C/C++.
• 2+ years developing concurrent code with asynchronous Rust.
• Proficient with Linux, RTOS, or bare-metal environments.
• Experience leading software design, version control, bug tracking and documentation.
• Experience building CI pipelines, automated testing and build/release management, and static/dynamic analysis tools.
• Willingness to travel up to 15% between Umbra’s Virginia & Santa Barbara offices.

Responsibilities

• Drive software architecture and design for flight software and payload software.
• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary engineers to deliver reliable, fault-tolerant software.
• Architect and implement software meeting system requirements and interfaces with subsystems and ground systems.
• Develop command and control software for spacecraft flight operations and peripherals.
• Lead test campaigns from unit to system level; contribute to documentation practices.
• Mentor peers and provide guidance on software design and coding practices.
• Ensure integration with flight hardware and conduct reliability and performance tests.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
