Job summary

Astrolab is seeking a Lead Rover Navigation and Perception Engineer to guide the design, testing, and integration of navigation and perception for its lunar rovers. This leadership role requires hands-on work with the GNC team to develop robust, testable systems for extreme environments.

Based in Hawthorne, CA, you will influence hardware-in-the-loop testing, asset characterization, and collaboration with flight software to deliver reliable autonomous navigation for CLV-1 missions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in STEM or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years designing, developing, and testing navigation, localization, and perception systems for rovers or autonomous platforms.
• Experience with sensor fusion and Kalman filtering for multimodal navigation (IMU, lidar, radar, star tracker, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Lead a small team to design, characterize, test, verify, and validate localization and perception for extraterrestrial rovers.
• Bring navigation and perception solutions from early design through flight operations on an aggressive CLV-1 lunar rover schedule.
• Collaborate with software team to implement and test navigation, perception, and obstacle avoidance flight software.
• Ensure robustness, upgradability during flight, and practicality of navigation/perception solutions.
• Devise, supervise, and execute testing with real sensors and flight computers in simulated lunar environments.
• Ensure navigation and perception meet performance and NASA requirements.
