Job Summary

The Lead Retail Pharmacy Technician performs all duties of a Pharmacy Technician in the START Retail Pharmacy, and also oversees other Pharmacy Technicians, assists with training and mentoring, provides direction to staff questions, communicates pertinent information to Pharmacists, and works only under the authority of a state registered pharmacist.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare all prescription medications for dispensing, including accurate interpretation and processing of prescription information through the computer system, removing stock bottles, counting medications, labeling containers, and ensuring prescriptions are checked by a pharmacist before release.
• Maintain and generate patient reports and records through the applicable computer system.
• Maintain appropriate prescription records and adequate medication inventories and pharmacy supplies.
• Oversee inventory activities: ordering, receiving, unpacking, recording, storing all medications and pharmacy supplies, and filing invoices appropriately.
• Contribute to effective operation of the pharmacy department by accurately recording patient information, medications, allergies, and third‑party information.
• Conduct inventory of all medication as required.
• Maintain daily filing and orderly maintenance of prescription hard copies, distributor invoices, and any necessary reports.
• Maintain prior authorization information for individual patients and become familiar with all third‑party plans.
• Demonstrate acceptable oral and written communication skills and courteous telephone operating skills.
• Organize and prioritize work assignments, manage workflow, and assist the pharmacist as necessary.
• Maintain current technician certification by completing all competence/skill assessment testing and attending continuing education programs; provide a true and correct copy of renewal certificate.
• Other duties as required.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Licenses: Current Pharmacy Technician certification from the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
• Experience: One to two years of retail pharmacy experience preferred but not required.

Special Equipment Requirements or Skills Required

• Computer keyboard knowledge and literacy (typing 45‑50 words per minute).
• Accurate spelling and typing of patient information onto manual and computer records.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Bilingual recommended.
