Job summary

Harvard University’s HIDIVE Lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics seeks a Research Software Engineer to lead open‑source bioinformatics visualization projects and collaborate with researchers across disciplines.

You will design, implement, and maintain software for genomic, single-cell, and spatial omics data; lead project strategy and mentoring; contribute to publications and community engagement; and help build scalable data tools in a dynamic academic setting.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree strongly preferred.
• 5+ years software engineering experience in web applications.
• 5+ years data analysis and visualization of single-cell and spatial biology data.
• 5+ years biomedical data research experience.
• 3+ years open source software development and community building.

Responsibilities

• Software Development: Design, implement, and maintain open-source research software tools for visualization and analysis of genomic, single-cell, and spatial omics data.
• Project Leadership: Take engineering and research ownership of software projects, developing and executing roadmaps.
• Software Maintenance and Quality: Establish engineering best practices including code review, testing, CI, documentation, and release management.
• Research and Publication: Lead writing of peer-reviewed publications and present work at conferences.
• Community Building and Outreach: Grow open-source user and developer communities through tutorials and workshops.
• Collaboration: Work with national/international consortia and domain scientists to gather requirements and deliver on milestones.
