Job summary

Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN seeks an ESH-Y Lead Radiological Control Technician to monitor personnel, areas and items leaving radiological zones, ensuring exposure controls and regulatory compliance.

You will supervise RCTs, determine monitoring devices, participate in safety reviews and emergency RADCON readiness, with potential to lead in the supervisor's absence.

Qualifications

  • DOE RCT CORE training certification required.
  • Minimum education/experience per listed requirements for radiological protection.
  • Must complete Y-12's RADCON Technician Certification Program.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations and unit conversions for results.
  • Broad knowledge to perform complex problem solving in radiological hazards.
  • Ability to recognize problems and define corrective actions.
  • DOE 426.2 compliance; eligible for clearance after employment.
  • US citizenship required for security clearance eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor personnel, areas and items leaving radiological areas to control exposure.
  • Coordinate RADCON coverage with Operations supervision for scheduled activities.
  • Lead field operations in the absence of the RADCON Supervisor.
  • Determine monitoring devices, anti-contamination clothing and stay times.
  • Review contamination and radiation survey data to ensure proper controls.
  • Notify supervisor of abnormal conditions and direct RCT assignments.
  • Assist in training less experienced RCTs and participate in reviews.

What You'll Do
  • Under very limited supervision, performs monitoring of personnel, work areas, and items leaving radiological areas for the control of exposures from internal and external sources
  • Interact with Operations supervision of area assigned; i.e., attend morning briefings to go over activities scheduled for the day/week, coordinate Radiological Control (RADCON) coverage needed in order to support those activities.
  • Assume responsibility, when directed, for Field Office, in the absence of the Radiological Control Technician (RCT) Supervisor.
  • Determines appropriate personnel monitoring devices, anti-contamination clothing (including respiratory protection), and stay times for radiological workers working with sources of radiation
  • Observes radiological work processes; conducts Field Observations, review area contamination and radiation survey data and air data in order to ensure proper controls are in place.
  • Notify Supervisor of abnormal conditions.
  • Direct work assignments of RCTs and assist in the training of less experienced RCTs
  • Participate in process reviews, walkdowns, incident investigations, as needed.
  • Participate as an Emergency Response Organization RADCON team member
  • Review and sign Radiological Surveys
  • Obtain and maintain eDCRO qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Requires a DOE RCT standardized CORE training certification
  • High school diploma or GED plus 7 years of Radiological Protection experience OR associate's degree in a science / technical field plus 5 years of Radiological Protection experience OR bachelor's degree in a science / technical field plus 5 years of Radiological Protection experience OR master's degree in a science / technical field plus 5 years of Radiological Protection experience OR PHD in a science/ technical field plus 5 years of Radiological Protection experience
  • Requires at a minimum successful completion of Y-12's RADCON Technician Certification Program
  • Required to perform mathematical computations and conversions to express sampling & monitoring results in proper units and terms.
  • Must have a breadth of knowledge required to perform complex problem solving activities covering a wide range of applications.
  • Must understand the basic nature of the types of radiation.
  • Must be knowledgeable and trained in principles, methods, and mechanics of monitoring and sampling of radiological hazards
  • Requires the ability to recognize and characterize problems related to standards and limits, plan investigative action, and define corrective measures.
  • Advancement to this level is dependent upon availability work assignments.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., High School diploma, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
