Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is hiring a Lead R&D Technician to head a fast-paced team building high-temperature superconducting magnets and assemblies. You’ll work across R&D, production, and support to advance prototypes, monitor processes, and drive continuous improvement.

Ideal candidates have 4+ years in mechanical/electrical assembly, strong leadership, and a passion for startup environments with safety and quality at the forefront.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with hand and power tools and general machine shop equipment.
  • Experience leading a team of technicians performing project-based mechanical and electrical assembly work.
  • Ability to lead and give direction to a fast-paced, highly skilled team.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, startup R&D environment with daily changes.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical assembly drawings, electrical schematics, P&IDs.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a variety of technical support skills such as mechanical and electrical assembly, plumbing, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, soldering, and wiring.
  • Commitment and ability to communicate safety and quality to your team.
  • Ability to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team in making electromechanical parts and assemblies for R&D to create processes & procedures.
  • Maintain the daily/weekly/monthly objectives and communicate them to employees.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team of manufacturing engineers and technicians to develop and qualify new manufacturing techniques and processes.
  • Perform and lead prototype hardware builds with minimal documentation and oversight.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a stakeholder for feedback to supervisor during reviews.
  • Assist in building new products and/or optimizing existing products.
  • Prepare product prototypes for internal and/or external customer evaluation and ensure robustness.
  • Conduct process monitoring activities, equipment capability & production troubleshooting, identifying, communicating, and implementing viable solutions to the team.
  • Maintain accurate records of all projects and assignments.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and operate in a safe manner.
  • Perform other related job duties as assigned by management.
