Job summary

Fairbanks North Star Borough seeks a Lead Public Information Officer to provide professional public information and public relations for the Borough and Mayor's Office, and to lead emergency communications during events.

The role coordinates media relations, develops strategic communication plans, organizes press conferences, and oversees social media programs. It requires discretion, strong writing and verbal skills, and the ability to train staff in public information practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; a Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, business, public administration or related field is preferred.
• Two years of experience in public information, public relations, news media, journalism or related setting.
• Proficiency with Windows-based software (MS Word, PowerPoint) and video/photo editing; professional use of social media; fast typing.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and meet Borough insurance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide public relations support to the Mayor’s Office. Communicate with media and public about Borough issues.
• Coordinate and develop internal and external strategic communication plans for a cohesive message.
• Arrange and coordinate press conferences and events for the Borough Mayor.
• Serve as contact for projects with professional organizations, other government agencies, and community partners.
• Manage crisis communication during emergencies and staff the public information component under the Emergency Operations Plan.
