Lead Proton Medical Physicist

Position: Lead Proton Medical Physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States.

Employment Type: Permanent Faculty, Open Rank, Full-Time.

Position Summary

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of North Carolina is seeking a lead faculty proton medical physicist for the North Carolina Cancer Center. The North Carolina Cancer Center is a member of the UNC Health Care System and is located in Chapel Hill, NC. The Center is staffed with 13 Radiation Oncologists, 7 Dosimetrists, 12 Medical Physicists, and 1 IT specialist. It currently operates three Elekta accelerators, a CyberKnife system, a Mobetron intraoperative accelerator, an Elekta HDR system, a Varian Versa used for LDR prostate system, and a Philips large bore CT simulator and MR simulator. The Center is in the process of installing a Varian TrueBeam and will receive a Mevion S250‑FIT Proton Therapy System in 2027. The lead proton faculty physicist is expected to begin as early as September 2026 to work with Mevion and project management teams to ensure successful installation and commissioning.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical duties: Oversee and support acceptance and commissioning of the Mevion S250‑FIT system, acquisition of dosimetry data, commissioning of proton treatment planning in RayStation, and subsequent operation of the proton therapy physics services. Ensure accurate and safe delivery of proton radiation treatments and maintain safety for patients and staff.
  • Research: Actively pursue research opportunities with the potential to secure extramural funding.
  • Residency Program: Mentor residents in the CAMPEP‑accredited Medical Physics Residency Program; provide guidance and support throughout residency training.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Medical Physics, Physics, Engineering, or a related field; be board‑certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP); and have graduated from a CAMPEP‑accredited residency program.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Strong technical skills, commitment to research and teaching, and excellent verbal and written communication skills are preferred.
