Day to Day:

A client of Insight Global's Electrical Engineering Services & Systems division is seeking a Utility Protection & Control (P&C) Technician. This position is open geographically and can be based anywhere in the United States, with up to 100% travel required. Our team offers extensive skills and experience in field service engineering, actively participating in societies like NFPA and IEEE, and collaborating with utilities and industries to stay at the forefront of technology and engineering techniques.

We support customers throughout the power system lifecycle: start-up, commissioning, maintenance, remote performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and emergency response 24/7, 365 days a year. Our services help optimize electrical equipment performance and extend the life of existing facilities.

The Utility P&C Technician will assist the Utility Lead P&C / Commissioning Engineer with technical oversight and documentation, including work plans, isolation plans, and functional test plans. The role involves hands-on testing and final checkout, ensuring safety and system reliability by identifying and correcting errors in design or installation before they compromise safety or system performance.

• Ability to read drawings and understand protection schemes, troubleshooting, and correcting non-working schemes.
• Perform testing and commissioning on reliability upgrades in energized “Brownfield” Transmission Stations.
• Work around energized “In-Service” electrical equipment.
• Develop Isolation Plans & Procedures for removing equipment such as relays, panels, transformers, etc.
• Knowledge of testing and operation of protective relays and power meters, including microprocessor-based, solid state, and electro-mechanical devices.
• Assist with testing of substation devices: voltage/current verification, trip testing, control system verification, and alarm testing.
• Experience with relay testing software like Enoserve (RTS) and Doble Protection Suite.
• Experience with relay communication software such as SEL Compass, AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, RFL Gard PRO, etc.
• Identify and resolve design errors.
• Witness or perform critical tests like DC Functional Trip Testing prior to energization and in-service.
