Job summary

The City of New York’s Legal Department seeks a seasoned prosecutor for a managerial role in the Animal Cruelty Prosecutions Unit, working alongside the Domestic Violence Bureau in the Special Prosecutions Division. The unit prosecutes misdemeanor and felony animal cruelty, involving non-verbal victims, forensic evidence, and cases of neglect, abuse, or fighting.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 years' experience as a prosecutor in New York State.
• Extensive knowledge of NY Penal and Criminal Procedure Law.
• Strong desire to learn NY Agriculture & Markets Law and case law.
• Exceptional research and writing skills for addressing novel issues.
• Experience conducting long-term investigations.
• Proficiency with search warrants and other investigative tools.
• Felony jury trial experience.
• Experience in presenting cases to a grand jury.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Superior organizational, multi-tasking, and case management skills.
• Existing knowledge of a prosecutor's discovery obligations.

Responsibilities

• Maintain vertical caseload of animal cruelty cases
• Prepare animal cruelty misdemeanor and felony complaints
• Conduct hearings and trials
• Supervise junior ADA handling animal cruelty cases
• Attend all court appearances for animal cruelty cases
• Advise and confer with NYPD Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad
• Interface with ASPCA attorneys and forensic veterinarians
• Assist ASPCA with security petition hearings
• Draft search warrants and other investigative applications
• Participate in and attend animal cruelty and animal protection trainings
