Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Lead Consultant - Fire and Life Safety Engineer to work from Arlington, VA or New York, NY on a full-time basis. You will lead fire protection and life safety system design, perform code analyses, and interface with clients while guiding multidisciplinary teams.

The role requires PE registration, US citizenship, ability to obtain a government security clearance, and extensive experience on federal projects. Revit and AutoCAD proficiency are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of fire protection and life safety consulting working on Federal projects
  • PE registration required.
  • Due to client requirements, US citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Secret/Top Secret clearance.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with team members and clients.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet project deadlines.

  • Review architectural drawings for compliance with building and fire code requirements.
  • Negotiate with authorities having jurisdiction on fire safety designs and proposals.
  • Produce fire safety strategy documents to inform building form throughout the design process.
  • Design fire protection and life safety systems including automatic sprinkler, detection, alarm, smoke management, and egress systems.
  • Carry out fire engineering calculations including smoke modeling and evacuation analysis.
  • Assist in the commissioning of fire protection and life safety systems.
  • Interface with clients and organize in-house resources.
  • Follow quality control review processes of project documentation.
  • Develop project proposals and budgets; conduct financial management.
  • Mentor junior staff; prepare technical reports/specifications.
  • Contribute to department initiatives and overall business development.

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Lead Consultant - Fire and Life Safety Engineer to work out of Arlington, VA or New York, NY. Be involved in projects with WSP USA Solutions Inc. Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. This opportunity provides technical assistance and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, design, development, building, testing, and inspecting of fire and life safety systems on building projects in the public and private sectors. Responsibilities include the research, design, concept development, planning, installation, operation, maintenance, and optimal integration of automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification systems, smoke control, egress analysis, and building and fire code analysis review and compliance. Substantiates reports and documentation regarding installation, construction, and operation specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact
  • Interpretation of building code, life safety, and fire code requirements. This will include familiarity with both ICC and NFPA codes, including IBC and NFPA 101.
  • Review of architectural drawings for compliance with building and fire code requirements

  • Producing with limited guidance fire safety strategy documents to inform and support the chosen building form throughout the design process.
  • Design of fire protection and life safety systems including automatic fire sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, smoke management systems, and egress systems.
  • With minimal support, carrying out and reviewing fire engineering calculations including smoke modeling and evacuation analysis from simple hand calculations to complex 3D computational modeling.
  • Assist in the commissioning of fire protection and life safety systems in commercial, institutional and industrial facilities.
  • Directly interfacing with the client.
  • Organizing in-house resources.
  • Following quality control review processes of all project documentation.
  • Developing project proposals and budgets.
  • Conducting financial management of all projects.
  • Mentoring junior staff.
  • Preparing technical reports/specifications.
  • Participating in department initiatives.
  • Contributing to the overall business development of the company.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $122,700 - $182,200. WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
