Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Lead Consultant - Fire and Life Safety Engineer to join our Arlington, VA or New York, NY team. You will lead fire protection design, life safety strategies, and code compliance across multi-site projects for federal and commercial clients.

Responsibilities include developing fire protection systems, performing advanced calculations, coordinating with jurisdictions, mentoring staff, and contributing to business development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of fire protection and life safety consulting working on Federal projects.
  • PE registration required.
  • US citizenship is required due to client requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Secret/Top Secret clearance.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in systems engineering methodologies, tools, and practices.
  • REVIT and AutoCAD proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret building code, life safety, and fire code requirements per ICC/NFPA.
  • Review drawings for code compliance with building and fire codes.
  • Negotiate with authorities having jurisdiction on fire safety designs.
  • Develop fire safety strategy documents to inform the design process.
  • Design fire protection and life safety systems (sprinklers, alarms, smoke, egress).
  • Perform fire engineering calculations including smoke modeling and evacuation analysis.
  • Assist in commissioning of fire protection systems.
  • Interface with the client and organize in-house resources.
  • Develop project proposals and budgets.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Prepare technical reports and specifications.
  • Contribute to department initiatives and business development.

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Lead Consultant - Fire and Life Safety Engineer to work out of Arlington, VA or New York, NY.

Be involved in projects with our WSP USA Solutions Inc. Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

This opportunity provides technical assistance and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, design, development, building, testing, and inspecting of fire and life safety systems on building projects in the public and private sectors. Responsibilities include the research, design, concept development, planning, installation, operation, maintenance, and optimal integration of automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification systems, smoke control, egress analysis, and building and fire code analysis review and compliance. Substantiates reports and documentation regarding installation, construction, and operation specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact
  • Interpretation of building code, life safety, and fire code requirements. This will include familiarity with both ICC and NFPA codes, including IBC and NFPA 101.
  • Review of architectural drawings for compliance with building and fire code requirements
  • Negotiating with authorities having jurisdiction on fire safety designs and proposals.
  • Producing with limited guidance fire safety strategy documents to inform and support the chosen building form throughout the design process.
  • Design of fire protection and life safety systems including automatic fire sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, smoke management systems, and egress systems.
  • With minimal support, carrying out and reviewing fire engineering calculations including smoke modeling and evacuation analysis from simple hand calculations to complex 3D computational modeling.
  • Assist in the commissioning of fire protection and life safety systems in commercial, institutional and industrial facilities.
  • Directly interfacing with the client.
  • Organizing in-house resources.
  • Following quality control review processes of all project documentation.
  • Developing project proposals and budgets.
  • Conducting financial management of all projects.
  • Mentoring junior staff.
  • Preparing technical reports/specifications.
  • Participating in department initiatives.
  • Contributing to the overall business development of the company.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of fire protection and life safety consulting working on Federal projects

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Experience in fire protection engineering design wo.
  • REVIT and AutoCAD proficiency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active US Government Security Clearance. State Department consulting and design experience preferred.

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $122,700 - $182,200

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
