Job summary

The City of San Clemente is seeking an experienced Principal Planner to lead the Planning Division, manage complex current and advanced planning projects, and mentor staff. This role collaborates with residents, developers, and City officials to balance technical planning requirements with community goals in a coastal California setting.

Ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of planning processes, staff supervision, and the ability to prepare clear staff reports and defend recommendations

Qualifications

• Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in urban planning, regional planning or urban design.
• Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning, geography, architecture, public administration, business management or a related field.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Class C driver's license, by date of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee current and advanced professional planning functions, including environmental impact reports and planning studies.
• Serve as project manager for large and complex current and advanced planning projects.
• Plan, supervise and review the work of staff responsible for planning and development projects.
• Assist the public at the front counter with development applications and proposals; prepare reports and recommendations.
• Oversee field inspections and ensure code compliance related to sign, landscape, screening, irrigation and parking.
