Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Norfolk, VA is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to lead marine structural design for ports and related facilities. You will guide projects from concept through construction, adapt designs to budget and client needs, and mentor junior staff.

You will collaborate with local and national teams, build client relationships with port authorities and shipyards, manage fees, schedules, and QA/QC, and contribute to business development while ensuring safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, Professional Engineering License (PE).
• Engineer Procure Construct (EPC) project experience preferred.
• Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of structural design codes (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE-7).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience leading the design of large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.

Responsibilities

• Lead structural design from concept through design completion for marine structures (piers, wharfs, bulkheads, fender systems).
• Develop project fees, schedules, scopes, budgets, and staff planning; manage change orders.
• Apply engineering codes and procedures to complex projects and find non-standard design solutions.
• Quality review of production drawings and construction administration coordination with field personnel.
• Lead field inspections and prepare technical reports for clients and publications.
• Build relationships with clients and contractors; drive customer satisfaction and business opportunities.
• Lead development of cost proposals and qualification statements to meet financial targets.
