Lead Phlebotomist

LAB-PHLEBOTOMY & OTHER (Billings Clinic Main Campus)

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)
Hours per Pay Period: 80 hours every two weeks (Non-Exempt)
Starting Wage DOE: $19.68 - 24.60

Role Overview

The Lead Phlebotomist leads the centralized Phlebotomy staff in clinic and hospital settings. You will grow your career in the laboratory, influence staff and leadership, train fellow phlebotomists, create work schedules, and assist with coverage. You will also learn about employee relations, recruitment, and policy writing. Maintaining your phlebotomy skills through benchwork is part of the role.

Essential Job Functions
General
  • Support and model behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission and philosophy.
Lead Responsibilities
  • Assist Laboratory Management with overseeing daily operations, scheduling, and work priorities.
  • Respond to procedural questions and resolve problems.
  • Orient new staff and provide ongoing training and education.
  • Participate in hiring, performance appraisals, and disciplinary processes.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
Phlebotomy Responsibilities
  • Collect and prepare patient specimens, including blood, urine, sputum, and cultures.
  • Follow guidelines for patient and specimen identification and address non-compliance.
  • Use computerized systems for orders, charges, reports, and inquiries.
  • Coordinate with healthcare providers regarding tests and results.
  • Communicate with patients and families about tests and instructions.
  • Provide backup coverage for laboratory clerks as needed.
  • Maintain supplies and a clean work environment.
  • Identify personal growth goals and meet organizational requirements.
  • Maintain competency in safety standards.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Less than high school education; 16 years of age minimum.
  • CPR certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Preferred: ASCP or AMT Phlebotomy Certification.
  • Courses in math and science preferred.
  • Leadership experience and successful completion of Fit Testing are advantageous.
  • Equivalent education and experience will be considered.
  • Proper licensure/certification in good standing if required.
